I'm advised by TMC Radio that the next release of the Simoco programming software will contain an additional function requested by another of their customers but likely to be of use to ourselves. The ability to have the radio send a GPS position report at a pre-set interval (Beaconing) has now been added to the software. It's likely that this option will be of use certainly in the tracking of vehicles where, on route to a callout, they may not make many transmissions themselves and the normal 80-120 seconds update period doesn't accurately show their location when travelling at speed. This gives you the ability to effectively set two reporting periods. One in MRMap by which all your portables are polled and another in selected radios, possibly a shorter period, by which faster, vehicle movements are tracked.
This function may also be useful for those team members forming the second wave of troops sent to a job where constant updating is not really required. A longer update period than that used for the first wave might help keep the noise down.
Note also that there are other new functions also in the pipeline but the above timed reporting will be the first to appear.
In my own personal opinion the Simoco GPS tracking hardware is now beyond the point where it can be beaten by anything else on the market and available in the UK and it continues to improve at the request and suggestion of Simoco customers. You can't really beat that approach.
