For all those questions about Mapyx

I'm now beginning to get questions relating to the Mapyx SARMAN application currently under development and although we are not involved in the development of this software in any way, I can hopefully reduce the size of my inbox by giving some history and basics information now. There is an MREW email address that you'll all have received where queries regarding SARMAN can be sent, if you ask the questions there then you'll get a reply. In most cases I won't be able to get answers for you I'm afraid, only where the question relates to MRMap. My thanks to Mapyx for providing the detail contained here. It's just a case of a little patience being needed by all of us and giving Mapyx some space to do this work on our behalf. The software will arrive on the appointed day as the company already has a reputation for delivering on time. Mapyx are undertaking a lot more than is actually described here, this is just the beginning. MRMap fills a separate roll in all of this and will continue to be developed and made available by Dave.
It's hoped, but not yet confirmed, that SARMAN will be able to handle Simoco GPS microphone data as well as any other formats that are included. The intention is not to put teams into a position where they've bought expensive hardware that doesn't then work with new software. That one wouldn't win us any friends! Conversely it's hoped but not yet confirmed that MRMap will be able to handle the decoding of the new generic GPS microphone that Mark is looking into. When all of this comes to fruition then mountain rescue England & Wales will have some extremely powerful tools at its disposal and that is never going to be a bad thing!

Mapyx Limited is a Geographical Information Solutions company best known for its Quo software used by individuals and business's alike. Mapyx became MREW's 'Official GIS & digital Mapping partner' on 1 March 2010. In discussion with MREW, Mapyx was given the opportunity to design and develop a search and rescue tool that would blend established search procedures and techniques with tracking and communications functionality. The brief was to provide a combined system which was user friendly with good graphical interfaces; so the challenge was set. Today, Mapyx has developed its search
and rescue management solution 'Sarman', that combines search management, tracking and communications ability.
The essence of the Sarman package is:
Search management based on established and proven MREW techniques.
Search type and area definition.
Multiple consensus calculations.
Search time estimator.
Full GIS functionality.
Custom and automatic reporting methods.
'Black box' recording of all events.
Communication and tracking interfaces via Radio GPS Mic, Satellite,
GPRS/GSM, APRS and Tetra.
MREW has been closely involved in the development process and field testing is underway in March 2010 by MREW. Once field testing is complete and field-lessons are incorporated, the system will be released to selective MREW groups for further evaluation before being rolled out to all MREW members free of charge. The target release date is May 2010.
