Some further work with this device has proven that if the internal solder link is made in both radios then it will function as a rebroadcast device. Again, a suitable diplexer or adequate aerial separation is needed but it functions as well as a rebroadcast as it does as a repeater, making it a very versatile device.
Making up a repeater from virtually any model of Icom vehicle radios is extremely simple although not cheap as a couple of £50 Icom dedicated output cables are needed.
The device shown here performs well and will pass both Icom and Simoco data as well as normal voice signals. It's similar to the commercial Icom MRP repeater.
Details of how to make this repeater are attached. There's one internal solder link to make and a 5-wire interface box that can be made without any soldering.
It's a 'Permanent Talk-Through' device and so any mobile within its range can talk to any other without any base intervention being necessary.
